Information We Collect

Text Data Processing

When you use our extension to extract Chinese subtitles from YouTube videos, the following occurs:

  • Only a specific portion of the YouTube video page is captured when you explicitly click the extension icon. This capture area is visually indicated to you before extraction occurs
  • The extracted text from this designated area is sent to our backend API (hanzi-ocr.xyz) for processing
  • Our server processes the text to provide dictionary definitions, pinyin romanization, translations, and word segmentation

What We Don't Collect

We want to be clear about what we DO NOT collect:

  • We do not collect, store, or track your personal information
  • We do not use cookies or tracking technologies
  • We do not collect information about other tabs or websites you visit
  • We do not monitor your activity when you're not actively using the extension

How We Use Information

The Chinese text extracted from YouTube videos is used solely for:

  • Providing dictionary definitions for Chinese characters and words
  • Generating pinyin romanization for pronunciation assistance
  • Translating Chinese text to English
  • Segmenting Chinese sentences into individual words

Permissions Explained

Our extension requires the following permissions to function:

Host Permission: https://www.youtube.com/*

This permission allows the extension to read content from YouTube pages to extract Chinese subtitles. It is necessary for the core functionality of the extension.

Host Permission: https://hanzi-ocr.xyz/*

This permission allows the extension to send extracted Chinese text to our backend API server for processing (dictionary lookups, translations, and pinyin generation).

Third-Party Services

Our extension interacts with:

  • YouTube (Google): The extension reads subtitle content from YouTube pages. We comply with YouTube's Terms of Service.
  • Our Backend API (hanzi-ocr.xyz): We operate and control this service entirely. No third parties have access to data sent to this API.

We do not share any data with third-party analytics services, advertising networks, or other external parties.
